Spend a beautiful summer evening with the Syracuse Peace Council listening to music\, eating good food\, and raising money for medical assistance in Gaza. The concert will feature a live performance from award winning vocalist and songwriter Colleen Kattau\, whose music has been featured on Democracy Now and been praised by folk icon Bob Seeger. Her music explores themes of social justice\, nature\, and American culture. Feel free to bring lawn chairs\, blankets\, and bug spray. If it rains\, the event will be held inside. Committing to nuclear abolition.  \n81 years ago an atomic weapon was used to destroy the city of Hiroshima\, unleashing a degree of wartime horror never before seen. Three days later\, another atomic bomb devastated Nagasaki. For a brief period\,  through determined activism and a few enlightened leaders\, risks of nuclear war were reduced via treaties and nuclear weapons reduction. Today\, however\, many treaties have been allowed to expire\, and the 9 nuclear nations are re-building their nuclear arsenals\, while additional countries attempt to acquire them. New weapons are far more destructive than those used 81 years ago. A few countries\, including the US\, have recently threatened nuclear weapon use\, an act generally considered taboo.  \nIt is time to raise our voices once again.  \n Join us to say “NO NUKES!” \nUniversity United Methodist Church | 1085 E. Genesee St. | Syracuse \nFriday\, August 7\, 2026 | 4:30-6:30pm  \nProcession: Gather at 4:30\, route is 1.2 miles  \nReception: 6 pm – 6:30pm   \nSpeakers:  \nYouko Yamamoto\, main organizer of the Bon-Odori Dance Festival for Peace in Kingston\, NY\, is well known as a peace activist\, cultural ambassador\, and owner/chef of Tanma Ramen Restaurant. \nBorn in Yokohama\, Yamamoto moved with her family to Hiroshima at age 10\, where the devastating legacy of the city’s 1945 nuclear catastrophe became a lifelong impetus for her work for peace. She will share with us her most recent conversations with aging Hiroshima atom bomb survivors after a spring trip to Japan\, and the inspiration for her continuing work that she gained from these interviews.  \nJoshua Reno is a socio-cultural anthropologist\, who researches various forms of waste and their impact on lives\, economies\, and social movements in the contemporary U.S. In a “spoken word” manner\, he will make real the connections between military waste and how it weaves into the uncanny\, uncountable scale of the Hiroshima bombing\, offering us a powerful\, somatic reflection on the true monstrosity of the weapon.  \nJosh is a professor at SUNY Binghamton\, and author of Military Waste: The Unexpected Consequences of Permanent War Readiness (2019\,). \n

DESCRIPTION:Syracuse Peace Council would like to celebrate our 90 years of educating\, agitating and organizing with you. Our birthday dinner\, a long held tradition\, is once again being held on Saturday\, October 3 at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church\, 5299 Jamesville Rd.\, Syracuse\, NY. The event will start at 5:30 with dinner.   \nPurchase tickets here  \nPlease purchase your tickets early or fill out our reservation form below so we can plan properly. \nTickets for dinner and the talk are $30 to $60 (sliding scale) \nTickets for the talk alone are $10 to $50 (sliding scale) \nThe after-dinner program will include a celebration of SPC’s amazing work over these decades\, entertainment and a conversation with MOSAB ABU TOHA\, a Palestinian poet\, and essayist from Gaza. His first collection of poetry\, Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear\, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Poetry. He recently won an Overseas Press Club Award and a Pulitzer Prize in Commentary for his essays on Gaza in The New Yorker.  \nJoining us with solo and collaborative musical performances are our friends Rachel Bass and Jack Braunstein\, two local musicians and organizers who met through Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) Syracuse\, where they are currently both member-leaders. \n*  Prices above are suggested donation.
