SUMMARY:90th Anniversary Birthday Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Syracuse Peace Council would like to celebrate our 90 years of educating\, agitating and organizing with you. Our birthday dinner\, a long held tradition\, is once again being held on Saturday\, October 3 at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church\, 5299 Jamesville Rd.\, Syracuse\, NY. The event will start at 5:30 with dinner.   \nPurchase tickets here  \nPlease purchase your tickets early or fill out our reservation form below so we can plan properly. \nTickets for dinner and the talk are $30 to $60 (sliding scale) \nTickets for the talk alone are $10 to $50 (sliding scale) \nThe after-dinner program will include a celebration of SPC’s amazing work over these decades\, entertainment and a conversation with MOSAB ABU TOHA\, a Palestinian poet\, and essayist from Gaza. His first collection of poetry\, Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear\, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Poetry. He recently won an Overseas Press Club Award and a Pulitzer Prize in Commentary for his essays on Gaza in The New Yorker.  \nJoining us with solo and collaborative musical performances are our friends Rachel Bass and Jack Braunstein\, two local musicians and organizers who met through Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) Syracuse\, where they are currently both member-leaders. \n*  Prices above are suggested donation. DESCRIPTION:Please join us in a two-session book discussion group on Let This Radicalize You: Organizing and the Revolution of Reciprocal Care\, by long-time organizers and movement educators Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba. \nWhen: Tues. Oct. 6 and Tues. Oct. 20  from 7 to 8:30pm \nWhere:  Syracuse Center for Peace and Social Justice top floor\, 2013 E. Genesee St.\, Syracuse 13210. The facilitators of the group are Aly Wane and Carol Baum.  \nAbout the book: \n‘With great clarity and generosity\, Hayes and Kaba model how participants in movements can be tough on systems while being gentle with one another and themselves\, nurturing a “counterculture of care’ as an integral part of building the next world.” – Naomi Klein \nAbout the authors: \nKelly is a Menominee author\, organizer\, movement educator and photographer. She is host of Truthout‘s podcast Movement Memos and the creator of Organizing My Thoughts\, a weekly newsletter about politics and justice work\, among many other things. She is also the author of Read This When Things Fall Apart\, a collection of letters to activists and organizers who are struggling. \nMariame is an organizer\, educator\, archivist and curator\, whose work focuses on ending violence\, dismantling the prison-industrial complex\, transformative justice and supporting youth leadership development. She is one of the pre-eminent abolitionist organizers in the nation\, having founded numerous organizations including Project NIA\, a group focused on ending youth incarceration and We Charge Genocide\, a group dedicated to ending police violence\, especially against youth of color\, as well as many other projects. \nKelly will be speaking at SU on Oct 23 and at with the Syracuse Peace Council on Oct 25 at ArtRage Gallery more info on the event soon.  \n
