Nuclear Free World Committee Honors Young Activists

In June the Nuclear Free World Committee of SPC presented the 2019 Youth Peace Award to Maria Phillips, a senior at the Public Service Leadership Academy at Fowler High School., and to Martine Dosa, a freshman at Nottingham High School.

Maria works on initiatives to address poverty and violence in our community. She is a mentor in violence prevention at Vera House and participates in the InterFaith Works Community-Wide Dialogues. As a student ambassador at the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection, Maria helps students stay in school. Martine is a strong advocate for gender equality as well as disability rights and inclusivity. She is co-leader of the Nottingham Girl-Up, a UN Foundation movement advocating gender equality globally, and a member of Nottingham Seeds of Peace, promoting conflict resolution, peace-building activities, and leadership development.

At the celebration we paid tribute to Jack Mannion, who died on May 25, 2019. For many years with his wife, Stephanie Miner, Jack sponsored the Youth Award. He was a fervent advocate for peace and justice in our community and will be greatly missed.

Are you a student or do you know a student who has been involved in activities working for peace and justice to better our world?

The Nuclear-Free World Committee of the Syracuse Peace Council, formerly Peace Action of CNY, has presented awards to local peace activists for many years, but 17 years ago began recognizing young peace activists. We are looking for high school students in Onondaga County who have shown a devotion to peace, justice, and protecting the environment. The students should have engaged in activities– through school, place of worship, or community—that demonstrate their passion to work on the underlying causes of war, violence, and injustice. We hope this recognition will help young people to become more aware of the issues of peace and justice in our communities, in our country, and in our world. Winners of the award will be recognized at a special event in the late spring and receive a small stipend to support their activism. Parents, teachers, and friends will be invited to come and hear what young activists are doing in our community.
