The Syracuse Peace Council eagerly anticipates the return of U.S. service members from the war in Iraq. As an organization that opposed the Iraq War before it was launched, we feel it is long overdue.

A desire to be close to family brought Magda Bayoumi first to Albany and then to Syracuse from her birthplace in Cairo, Egypt. Though she shies away from the label “activist,” Magda has a long history of advocating for children with special needs and, in recent years, teaching about her religion, Islam. These days she works with several local organizations including the Rahma Clinic, the Islamic Society of CNY, ACTS, and of course SPC.

On May 4, 2011, CNN World News asked whether killing Osama bin Laden was legal under international law. Other news commentary has questioned whether it would have been both possible and advantageous to bring Osama bin Laden to trial rather than kill him.

Bombing People Creates More Terrorism - a Peace Council Statement on the Mid East

The Syracuse Peace Council (SPC) is relieved that the international community has developed a ceasefire agreement for the war between Israel and Hezbollah. Unfortunately, the ceasefire was deliberately delayed by our government. In the process over 1200 Lebanese were killed along over a hundred Israelis.

We hope that this fragile agreement holds and that the international community seizes this opportunity to renew concerted efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (at the root of the recent violence).

We come to your office today to express our shame and outrage that the Bush Administration -- with Congressional complicity -- maintains its illegal and immoral prison at the US Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Further, we are here to demand that, as our elected representative, you do all in your power to close that vile facility.
